Cup Sealing Machines: Manual, Semi-Automatic and Automatic
A cup sealing machine closes drink and food cups with a heat-sealed film lid, so they can be shaken, carried and delivered without spills. Manual sealers suit low volumes, semi-automatic machines speed up the seal and cut, and automatic machines handle the cycle on their own once the cup is in place. Cup size and cup material decide which machine and film you need.
What a cup sealing machine does
A cup sealer places a sheet of sealing film over the rim of a filled cup and presses a heated plate onto it. The heat bonds the film to the rim, and the film is cut from the roll. The sealed cup is leak-resistant, can be shaken, and is opened by piercing the film with a straw or peeling it off.
Cup sealers became common with bubble tea, where drinks are shaken and served with a wide straw. Today they are used for juices, smoothies, iced coffee, cocktails to go, soups, yogurt, desserts and sauces, especially for delivery and takeout.
Why seal cups instead of using lids
A heat-sealed film does not pop off in a delivery bag, and it shows clearly if a cup has been opened. Staff do not need to fit and press lids by hand during peak hours, and one roll of film replaces stacks of lids in different sizes. Omcan names juice bars, bubble tea outlets, cafés and beer bars as typical users of its cup sealer and points out that sealed drinks stay fresh and spill-free during transport.
Manual, semi-automatic and automatic
Manual cup sealers
On a manual cup sealer, the operator places the cup in a holder and pulls a lever that presses the heated plate onto the film. Some manual machines use pre-cut lids, others a film roll that is cut by hand or with the lever stroke. Manual sealers are compact and simple and suit low volumes, events and small cafés. The trade-off is effort and speed: every cup needs a lever stroke, and seal quality depends partly on the operator.
Semi-automatic cup sealers
Semi-automatic machines take over part of the cycle. Typically the operator places the cup, and the machine lowers the heated plate, seals and cuts the film when a button or sensor starts the cycle. This gives more consistent seals and less operator fatigue than a lever machine.
Automatic cup sealers
Automatic machines run the sealing cycle on their own once the cup is in place, including feeding and cutting the film. The Omcan 44644 is such a machine: Omcan describes it as an automatic cup sealing machine for 95 mm cups. In production, fully automatic in-line systems connect fillers and sealers on a conveyor; these are larger industrial machines.
The three types compared
| Criterion | Manual | Semi-automatic | Automatic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealing action | Lever pulled by the operator | Machine seals after a button or sensor starts the cycle | Machine runs the full cycle once the cup is placed |
| Film | Pre-cut lids or roll | Roll, cut by the machine | Roll, fed and cut by the machine |
| Operator effort | Highest | Medium | Lowest |
| Seal consistency | Depends on the operator | More consistent | Consistent |
| Typical use | Low volumes, events | Cafés and shops with steady volume | Busy drink counters, delivery-focused shops |
Cup size and cup material
A cup sealer is built for specific rim diameters. The Omcan 44644 seals 3.7″ (95 mm) cups and comes with an extra ring for 3.5″ (90 mm) cups. Measure the outer rim of your cups before ordering, and keep to the cup sizes the machine supports.
The sealing film must match the cup material. Omcan rates the 44644 for paper, PP, PE and PLA cups and gives a sealing temperature of 356 °F (180 °C ±10 °C) for PP and paper cups. If you change cup suppliers, test the new cups with your film.
Sealing film
Sealing film comes on rolls, often printed with a logo or pattern. For the Omcan 44644, Omcan supplies film item 47486 with 2,000 cups per roll, sold separately. Keep a spare roll at the station: running out of film stops the drink line.
Workflow at the counter
Place the sealer next to the filling station, so a filled cup goes straight into the machine. Wipe the rim before sealing: liquid or sugar on the rim weakens the seal. Give staff a short routine: fill, wipe, seal, check, hand over. At busy times, a second station prevents a queue at the sealer.
Which drinks and foods to seal
Sealed cups suit drinks that travel: bubble tea, iced coffee and tea, juices, smoothies and lemonades. Many shops also seal cups of fruit, yogurt, desserts, soups and sauces for grab-and-go fridges. Very hot drinks need care: check the cup and film specifications for the temperature range, and leave room below the rim so the film does not touch the liquid during sealing.
Printed film and branding
Film printed with a logo or pattern turns the lid into a small advertising space and helps customers recognize your shop. Plain film keeps costs and ordering simple. If you plan printed film, check with the film supplier that it suits your machine and cups, and order enough to cover several weeks of sales.
Power and space
Countertop cup sealers usually run on standard power. The Omcan 44644 runs on 110–120 V, draws 120 W and measures 12.8″ × 13.8″ × 23.3″ at 55.1 lb, so plan a sturdy spot with room above for the film roll.
Cleaning and care
Keep the sealing area free of spilled drinks and sugar residue, and clean the cup holder and ring regularly. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions, and switch the machine off and let the heating plate cool before cleaning. A clean sealer gives cleaner seals and fewer rejected cups.
How to choose
Count the cups you seal in your busiest hour. A few cups per hour work on a manual sealer. A steady flow of drinks, especially for delivery, justifies a semi-automatic or automatic machine. Check that the machine supports your cup sizes and materials, and order film together with the machine.

Which cup sizes does the Omcan 44644 seal?
It seals 3.7″ (95 mm) cups, and an extra ring included with the machine allows 3.5″ (90 mm) cups. Measure the outer rim of your cups before ordering, because cups of other sizes do not fit the sealing ring.
Can one machine seal paper and plastic cups?
Omcan rates the 44644 for paper, PP, PE and PLA cups. The sealing film must suit the cup material, so test your cups with the film before going live, especially when you change cup suppliers or switch between paper and plastic cups.
Is sealing film included?
No. For the Omcan 44644, Omcan supplies sealing film as item 47486 with 2,000 cups per roll, sold separately. Order it together with the machine and keep a spare roll at the station, so the drink line never stops for film.
How do I get a reliable seal?
Fill the cup below the rim, wipe the rim clean before sealing, use film that matches the cup material, and keep the sealing area free of sugar and drink residue. Weak seals usually come from a wet or dirty rim or from film that does not suit the cup.
Which warranty applies to the cup sealer?
Each machine is covered by its manufacturer's warranty; the terms are listed on each product page. If you have a question about a specific model before ordering, call +1 469-809-4363 or send a quote request, and we will answer it in writing.
