How to Choose Medical and Pharmaceutical Packaging Equipment

In medical and pharmaceutical packaging, the seal itself is part of product quality. A machine must seal the chosen material reliably, repeat the same settings on every cycle and fit into your clean environment and your documented process. The points below help you narrow the choice; your own quality requirements decide the final selection.

Repeatable seal settings

Look for machines where seal time, temperature and pressure are set and repeated by the machine, not by the operator's hand. The AIE A1 Series closes the arm with a timer-controlled electromagnet. Pneumatic and digital models set pressure or temperature as values. AmeriVacS sealers do not heat seal until the jaws have fully closed.

Clean room operation

The AmeriVacS AVC-20 generates vacuum with compressed air instead of an electric pump motor, so there is no oil and no motor heat. AmeriVacS describes its AVC, AVN and AVS machines as clean room compatible.

Vacuum and gas flush

Vacuum removes air and moisture from barrier bags; gas flush replaces the air with nitrogen or another inert gas. The AmeriVacS AVN does both in one pedal stroke with a retractable nozzle; the AmeriVacS AVS-20 is the vacuum-only version.

Thick and multi-layer materials

Barrier pouches and foil laminates often need heat from both sides. The AIE FD Series has heating elements on both jaws. The AIE-602CH constant heat sealer suits foil laminated bags.

Cartons and kits

For shrink wrapping cartons and kits, the Maripak IMPACK PRO 40 side sealer wraps continuously, and the AIE infrared tunnel shrinks smaller packs.

Documentation

Ask for the manuals and specifications you need for your process documentation when you request a quote. Specifications are listed on each product page. Plan time for your own qualification steps before the machine goes into production, and include the operators who will run it, so their experience shapes the work instructions.

Material compatibility

Before you buy, test your exact pouch or bag on the machine settings you plan to use. Seal width, temperature range and maximum material thickness differ between models and are listed on each product page.

Operator safety and ergonomics

Foot-operated and semi-automatic sealers keep both hands free and reduce fatigue in long shifts. Pneumatic and electromagnet closing gives the same pressure without operator effort.

Utilities

AmeriVacS AVC, AVN and AVS machines need compressed air (for example 6 CFM at 110 PSI for the AVS and AVN-20 to 35); the CAVS and CAVN have a built-in compressor. AIE sealers run on standard power.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not choose a sealer before testing your exact pouch: barrier films, Tyvek-style materials and foil laminates react very differently to heat. Do not underestimate the utilities: a nozzle vacuum sealer without enough compressed air will not reach its rated vacuum. And do not leave documentation to the end: collect the manuals and specifications you need for your quality system while you compare machines, not after delivery.

Planning checklist

Note the pouch or bag material and size, whether you need vacuum, gas flush or a plain seal, the number of packs per shift, your clean room requirements, and the available power and compressed air. Send this with your quote request so we can match the machine and ask the manufacturer the right questions.

Choosing by volume

Low volumes are sealed on foot or tabletop sealers; medium volumes on semi-automatic sealers; continuous production on automatic side sealers with a tunnel.

Medical & Pharmaceutical Packaging FAQ

Which sealers suit clean room use?

AmeriVacS describes its AVC chamber sealer and its AVN and AVS nozzle sealers as clean room compatible. The AVC generates vacuum with compressed air instead of an electric pump motor, so there is no oil in the machine. Check the requirements of your clean room class with your quality team.

Can seal parameters be set and repeated?

Yes. Semi-automatic AIE sealers repeat timer settings, pneumatic models repeat pressure, and the AIE-805AS and AIE455FCE let you set seal temperature and time digitally. AmeriVacS sealers do not heat seal until the jaws have fully closed. Your process validation remains your responsibility.

Do I need vacuum or gas flush for medical products?

It depends on your product and package design. Vacuum removes air and moisture; gas flush replaces the air with nitrogen or another inert gas. The AmeriVacS AVN offers both in one machine, and each function can be switched off when it is not needed.

Which machines seal foil and barrier pouches?

Thick foil laminates and multi-layer barrier pouches often need heat from both sides or constant heat. The AIE FD Series heats both jaws, and the AIE-602CH constant heat sealer suits foil laminated bags. Test your exact pouch before ordering, using the settings you plan to run.

Can I get manuals before I order?

Ask for the documents you need when you request a quote, and we will request them from the manufacturer. Specifications for each machine are listed on its product page, including power and compressed air requirements, so you can check them while you wait for the documents.
