How to Choose E-Commerce and Fulfillment Packaging Equipment

Fulfillment centers pack many different products in small numbers each. The machines must be quick to set up, easy to learn for new staff and flexible across sizes. Here is how to match equipment to your orders.

Bundling and kits

Shrink wrapping holds several items together as one unit, protects them from dust and scratches and shows if a pack has been opened. A hood sealer such as the Maripak Compack 5800i seals and shrinks in one chamber, with no tunnel. The Compack 5800HC takes products up to 13″ high, and the 5800MC adds an automatic discharge conveyor.

Higher volumes

When hood sealers no longer keep up, the Maripak LMC 5844-M semi-automatic L-bar sealer and a tunnel handle about 10–15 packs per minute per Maripak. The TMC Pro 5844-M combines sealer and tunnel in one machine.

Poly bags and mailers

For apparel, soft goods and small items in poly bags, an impulse sealer is enough. The AIE A1 Series closes the arm automatically with an electromagnet, so packers only feed bags. A round wire version seals and trims in one step.

Changing product sizes

Fulfillment means changing sizes, often several times an hour. Hood sealers and L-bar sealers handle many sizes within their seal area; Maripak touchscreens store setups for recurring products. Check the seal area against your largest item, including the height.

Space

Fulfillment floors are busy, and every square foot near the packing stations counts. Hood sealers and the TMC Pro save the space of a separate tunnel, and Maripak machines stand on wheels so they can be moved when the layout changes.

Power and compressed air

The Compack and LMC models run without compressed air on 200–240 V single-phase power; the TMC Pro needs 220 V single-phase, 50 A. The AIE A1 runs on standard power.

Film

Polyolefin shrink film is the usual choice for retail bundles because it is clear and strong. Use the Shrink Film Calculator to estimate film use per pack.

Training and safety

Choose machines with clear controls and safety features, such as the safety sensor on the LMC that stops the cycle when an obstacle is detected. Short, repeatable steps help seasonal staff get up to speed quickly, and a one-page work instruction next to the machine answers most questions.

Common mistakes to avoid

Many fulfillment teams buy for the average product and then struggle with the largest one: check the seal area and chamber height against your biggest bundle. Another mistake is placing the sealer far from the packing stations, which adds walking. Finally, plan film storage and roll changes, because a machine that waits for film is a bottleneck in peak weeks.

Planning checklist

Note your largest and most common bundle sizes, the number of bundles per hour at peak, the power available at the packing area and the floor space. Send these with your quote request, and we will suggest a hood sealer, L-bar or combination that fits.

Peak seasons

Size the equipment for your peak weeks, not your average day. Count the bundles per hour in your busiest week last year and add the growth you expect. A second hood sealer or a step up to a semi-automatic L-bar can be cheaper than overtime during peaks.

Delivery and installation

Maripak machines ship by freight from Allentown, Pennsylvania; installation and training by Maripak technicians can be quoted. AIE sealers ship from City of Industry, California.

E-Commerce & Fulfillment FAQ

What is the easiest way to start shrink wrapping bundles?

A hood sealer such as the Maripak Compack 5800i. The operator places the product in centerfold film and closes the hood, and the machine seals and shrinks in the same chamber. It needs no separate tunnel and no compressed air, and it takes little floor space.

How many packs per minute can we wrap?

Per Maripak, Compack hood sealers wrap about 5–10 packs per minute, the 5800MC with automatic discharge about 7–12, and the LMC semi-automatic L-bar about 10–15 with a tunnel. The real number depends on pack size, film and how fast products are loaded.

Which sealer is right for poly mailers and bags?

An impulse sealer. The AIE A1 Series closes its arm automatically on a timer, so packers only feed bags, and a round wire version seals and trims the bag in one step. For occasional use, a foot-operated impulse sealer is enough.

Can shrink wrapping replace a box?

For some products, a shrink-wrapped bundle goes directly into a mailer or carton and keeps the items together and clean. Whether it can replace a box depends on the product's protection needs and your carrier's requirements. Many fulfillment centers use shrink wrapping to bundle items inside the shipping box.

Do these machines need compressed air?

No. The Maripak Compack, LMC and TMC Pro models listed here run without compressed air, and the AIE A1 runs on standard power. The Maripak machines need a 200–240 V single-phase supply; check the amperage on each product page with your electrician before ordering.
