How to Choose an Impulse or Heat Sealer

A heat sealer is often the first packaging machine a business buys, and the choice looks simple. In practice, the bag material, the bag size and the number of bags per day decide which sealer works well. Go through these questions in order.

Impulse or constant heat

An impulse sealer heats its sealing element only while the jaws are closed, then cools the seal under pressure. It needs no warm-up, uses power only during the seal and suits polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) bags. Most AIE foot sealers and the AmeriVacS AVP work this way.

A constant heat sealer keeps its jaws at a set temperature all the time. It is the better choice for foil laminated bags, coated films, cellophane and thick gusseted bags, which need steady heat to fuse. The AIE-602CH and the AIE CA Series are examples. Our guide Impulse vs. Constant Heat vs. Band Sealers explains the difference in more detail.

Seal length and seal width

Choose a seal length longer than your widest bag. AIE offers 8″ to 40″, and the AmeriVacS AVP goes up to 50″. The seal width ranges from round wire, which seals and trims, to 2 mm, 5 mm and 10 mm flat seals and 15 mm mesh seals. A wider seal looks more finished and is a good match for thicker bags.

Single or double heating

Single-element sealers heat from one side and handle most PE bags. Double impulse sealers, such as the AIE FD Series, heat from both jaws at once and seal thick gusseted and multi-layer bags up to about 20 mm. Upper jaw models such as the AIE FUA keep the element away from moisture and powder.

Hand, foot, semi-automatic or pneumatic

Foot-operated sealers keep both hands free for the bag and are the most common choice for daily packing. Semi-automatic sealers such as the AIE A1 Series close the arm with an electromagnet on a timer, so the operator only feeds bags. Pneumatic sealers such as the AIE FA Series and the AmeriVacS AVP close the jaws with compressed air for the same pressure on every seal. Digital models such as the AIE-805AS let you set seal temperature and time as values, which helps where seal settings must be documented.

Vertical sealing and trimming

Vertical sealers such as the AIE FDV and CFV Series seal bags while they stand upright, which keeps powders and liquids away from the seal. Trimming models such as the AIE FC Series and the AIE600FDC cut off excess film in the same step.

Imprinting codes

If every bag needs a date or lot number, AIE hot stamp imprinters print it while you seal. The AIE-663, 661HS and 662HS attach to AIE sealers.

Bag materials at a glance

PE and PP bags seal well on impulse sealers with a 2 mm or 5 mm element. Foil laminated, metallized and coated bags usually need constant heat or double impulse heating. Gusseted bags have four layers at the folds, so they need more heat and a wider seal. Cellophane and polycello films are typical constant heat materials. If you use several materials, test each one, or choose a machine with adjustable heat on both jaws.

Workspace and ergonomics

Foot sealers come with a stand, and many AIE models include an adjustable work table that carries the bag during sealing. Tilting heads, as on the AIE FIT Series, let you seal at an angle so contents stay at the bottom. For heavy bags, a vertical sealer avoids lifting the bag onto a table.

How many bags per day?

For a few hundred bags a day, a foot sealer is usually enough. If an operator seals all shift long, a semi-automatic or pneumatic model reduces fatigue and keeps seals uniform. For continuous high volumes, a band sealer seals bags while they move.

Impulse & Heat Sealers FAQ

What is the difference between an impulse sealer and a constant heat sealer?

An impulse sealer heats the element only during the seal and then cools it under pressure, with no warm-up time. It suits PE and PP bags. A constant heat sealer keeps its jaws hot all the time and suits foil laminates, coated films and thick gusseted bags. The material of your bag is the main deciding factor.

What seal width should I choose?

Thin PE bags seal well with a 2 mm seal. A 5 mm seal is a common all-round choice and looks more finished. A 10 mm or mesh seal suits thick, gusseted or laminated bags. A round wire seals and trims the bag in one step, which gives a neat edge on retail packs.

Do impulse sealers need a special power supply?

Most AIE foot and tabletop sealers run on a standard 110 V outlet; some larger models are available in 220 V on request. Pneumatic models such as the AIE FA and AC Series and the AmeriVacS AVP also need compressed air. The power and air requirements are listed on each product page.

Which parts wear out on an impulse sealer?

The heating element and the Teflon tape that covers it wear with use, and the silicone rubber pad on the opposite jaw wears over time. They are normal replacement parts. Keep a spare set for your model so the sealer can keep working when one needs to be changed.

Can I print dates or lot numbers while sealing?

Yes. AIE hot stamp imprinters print up to 3 lines while the bag is sealed. The AIE-663 fits AIE foot sealers, the AIE-661HS fits AIE constant heat foot sealers and the AIE-662HS fits impulse sealers. The stand-alone AIE DHH imprinter works without a sealer.

Which warranty covers these sealers?

Each machine is covered by its manufacturer's warranty; the terms are listed on each product page. If you have a question about a specific model before you order, call us at +1 469-809-4363 or send a quote request, and we will answer it in writing.
